Power firm coughs up P4.3M to protect pawikans

The country’s largest coal-fired power plant has shown its concern for the nature and environment, at least, for “pawikans” or the endangered green turtle.

The GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co. (GNPD) signed on Tuesday a memorandum of agreement with the Provincial Government of Bataan (PGB), Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office, and the Sagip Pawikan Sitio Fuerte Association to finance with P4.3 million the rehabilitation for three years of the “pawikan” hatchery in Morong.

The GNPD agreed to provide funding for the adapted pawikan hatchery in Barangay Poblacion, Morong being managed and monitored by Sagip Pawikan Sitio Fuerte Association while the PGB and municipal government of Morong will formulate and implement the program of activities.

Bataan Gov. Joet Garcia said the green turtle became endangered due to rampant poaching and smuggling in the past. He urged local residents to equip themselves with sheer determination to protect the “pawikan” and environment. He said Bataan has a good marine environment for which reason the endangered green turtles are still around. “Pinagpala ang ating lalawigan sa pagkakaroon ng pawikan dahil sa maganda ang estado ng ating karagatan,” he pointed out.
